One of the large female nudes, of which Leger created many, Woman with a Cat was produced during Leger’s “mechanical period.” Indicative of his love for mechanical and technological advance, the woman in the painting seems to be made of a rubbery substance, made up of the geometrical shapes of cones, cubes, and cylinders. The simplicity of the figure, which has no facial features, is complimented by the stark color palette, including only red, black, yellow and white. Leger also produced variations of this figure, including a smaller, near identical painting to this one.
